Freezing Cold

I had quite an adventure today! I walked in my classroom and found the temperature was only 40 degrees!! I could almost see my breath in the room. So I called the custodian to see if he could come and fix it. Unfortunately he couldn’t fix it, so he had to call someone from the district. Normally if they say they’re calling the district, you can plan on it happening sometime in the next year. But apparently if you’re room is only 40 degrees, they come quickly. They were there in about 30 minutes to fix the heater.

I figured we could survive the first part of the day because we had an assembly first thing and then we were going to the computer lab. So my kids came in and I told them to just keep their coats on, because the heater was broken. Even though they complained about being kind of cold, I think they really loved it, because as soon as anyone walked in the room, they would shout at them to keep their coats on.

We only had a few minutes before our assembly started, but I made the kids exercise to keep warm. (I figured building a fire was out of the question!) I thought it would be kind of fun, but one kid told me, this is like “grandma exercising!” I think the rest of the class at least appreciated that we weren’t working!

After the assembly, our heater was fixed, but it took a really long time for the room to warm up (by then it was only 44 degrees). So we headed off to this little tiny classroom for the next two hours. There wasn’t enough room for chairs and we had to sit on the floor and work. I was ready for mass chaos, but my class was so quiet. I was amazed at how wonderful the day went. In fact, I praised them over and over. When I went to praise them again, one kids said, “You already told us that!” Who knew you could praise TOO much!

There is never a dull moment in elementary school!!

How cute! That is impressive that they could be so good for you. I’m glad it was fixed though. I don’t think I could stand being in that kind of cold all day!!

I am totally impressed that the kids were good for you because if it was me, lets just say I would be asking to go home a lot! Was your room the only one that had the heater broken? It is sad that the other rooms couldn’t warm yours up like with apartment building.

“Grandma exercises,” huh? Awesome. I’m sure I’ve done my share of those with my 4th graders too. Ha ha ha. The other day I mentioned that it was really hot in our room and one boy said, “I know…it’s cause I’m in here.” Wow…we cracked up.
