And the votes are in…..

Yesterday was an interesting day for us. I convinced Steve that we needed to go and experience our first caucus meeting. I actually didn’t know what it was until a few weeks before. (I had to have my parents explain it to me). Apparently it is where you elect delegates who actually vote for you for certain things. So we went and at first listened to a couple of speeches by some candidates. Then we went to our precinct meeting. This is where you meet with the people who live right around you. Well, our plan was just to go and observe and not talk at all. I just wanted to get a little political experience. Well, the first thing that they voted for was the secretary/treasurer for the precinct. One of the guys at the meeting points to me and says, “she looks nice I nominate her.” I was taken aback, especially since I thought I was coming to observe. Well they counted the votes and I got the second highest amount of votes and so I am the “alternate” secretary/treasurer. I was a little relieved especially since I didn’t know what the job description even was. So then we start voting for the county delegates, and I get nominated again, and then Steve gets nominated. We were both a little nervous at this one, but we didn’t know that you could turn down a nomination. Well since this was actually an important job, you had to make a one minute speech about what you were looking for in a candidate, etc. Of course Steve and I did not have a speech planned. Steve’s speech consisted of, “I’m new at this, but if you want to vote for me, I would do my best.” Mine was also very basic, but I added a little plea, “I’m new, but I’d love to learn!!” Our speeches together probably weren’t even one minute!! :) Well, not to our surprise we didn’t make it. We ended up being the second and third alternates. Well, I was second and Steve was third…if you want to know the actual vote counts!! :) We were a little relieved not to be delegates…we thought maybe next year when we know a little more about the process. So we left the meeting satisfied that we had done our political duty, but then about an hour later, I got a call saying they actually needed more delegates from our precinct and so I was chosen to be a county delegate. I’m still learning about what that actually means, but it should be a good experience.

That is so funny! I was just telling Andrew the other day that I wanted to get more involved in our town politics, but not that involved. I would totally vote for you guys!

When I was younger, I was involved in the NSL youth council, and I totally loved that. But that must have been a little overwhelming being nominated like that. You guys are so awesome, I can’t believe they passed you guys up! :)

I am very impressed you guys! I didn’t know what a caucus meeting was either … actually, I still don’t … you’ll have to explain it all to us! Good Luck!

Amy, you crack me up!!!! I’m nearly in tears…this could easily fit into your “made-up” life story. I really do wish we lived closer together, thanks for the laugh.
